A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical is set to close its Broadway run on Sunday, February 23, after an impressive 151 performances, including 31 previews.
The show debuted previews on October 16, 2024, and officially opened on November 11. As it approaches its closing date, the producers expressed mixed feelings in a recent statement, highlighting their pride in showcasing Louis Armstrong’s remarkable life and music. They extended heartfelt thanks to everyone involved and to the audiences who embraced the show.
Despite its heartfelt performances, the musical has faced challenges, often attracting less than 70% capacity at Broadway’s Studio 54.
This musical journey explores Armstrong’s iconic career and features beloved songs like “What a Wonderful World” and “When You’re Smiling.” The role of Louis Armstrong is played by James Monroe Iglehart, with a talented cast that includes Darlesia Cearcy as Lucille Wilson, Kim Exum as Alpha Smith, Dionne Figgins as Daisy Parker, and Jennie Harney-Fleming as Lil Hardin.
The production is backed by a diverse group of producers, including Thomas E. Rodgers, Jr., Renee Delaplaine Rodgers, and Vanessa Williams, among others.
