WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas Department for Children and Families has launched a new program to help families with food costs during the summer. Applications for SUN Bucks opened on January 27.
SUN Bucks, which was previously known as Summer EBT, offers financial support for eligible school-aged children. Each child can receive a one-time benefit of $120 per year to help with grocery expenses over the summer.
Laura Howard, Secretary of DCF, emphasized the importance of access to healthy food for children, especially when school meals aren’t available. “SUN Bucks are here to help families provide nutritious meals during this time,” she said.
Many families may automatically receive SUN Bucks without needing to apply. Households with eligible children will receive a letter from DCF in January 2025, letting them know about the benefit. The funds will either be added to their existing Kansas Benefits Card or sent in the mail by April.
If a family does not receive a letter but believes they qualify, they should apply. Applications for SUN Bucks will be accepted until August 29, 2025. Families can use their DCF self-service account to apply through the online portal, which can be found here. Benefits will start being issued in April 2025.
