Environment Fund Grants: Support for Sustainable Solutions in Eswatini

In Eswatini, businesses, community groups, and organizations can apply for Environment Fund Grants of up to E300,000 until April 16, 2026. This initiative, supported by the government, aims to tackle environmental issues while fostering sustainable livelihoods.

Payday LaNgwenya, an Environment Fund Officer from the Eswatini Environment Authority, shared insights during an interview on Eswatini TV’s Market View. He explained that the National Environment Fund is a way to combat environmental degradation and climate change. These issues are affecting both communities and businesses, but local solutions can make a difference.

The fund is open to a variety of applicants, including municipalities and private enterprises, as long as their projects focus on environmental management and climate action. LaNgwenya highlighted that this fund is not just for social enterprises. It aims to link environmental protection with economic opportunities. Initiatives that provide clear environmental benefits and can improve livelihoods will be prioritized.

Recent statistics show that climate-related disasters have increased by 47% over the last decade, making projects like waste management and renewable energy generation critical for both community resilience and economic growth. LaNgwenya emphasized that projects should create jobs and engage youth, which is essential for sustainable development.

The grant program is adopting a blended finance approach. This means that alongside grants, applicants can seek other funding sources to enhance their project viability. “It’s not just about grants; we need sustainable solutions,” he remarked.

LaNgwenya also noted that the fund acts as a stepping stone for accessing larger international climate financing. Successful, small-scale projects can serve as models for broader initiatives.

As the deadline approaches, applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that benefit both people and the environment. Expert insights suggest that collaborative efforts and innovation are essential for meaningful change.
