Valley City State University (VCSU) is buzzing with activity this December! Here’s what to know:
Winter Commencement on December 18
Mark your calendars! VCSU’s Winter Commencement is set for 3:30 p.m. on December 18 in Vangstad Auditorium. President Alan LaFave will honor 121 graduates—15 master’s and 106 undergraduate students. Macy Fridgen, a standout student, will share her reflections, while Dr. Nicholas Galt will represent the faculty. Interested in watching the ceremony? It’ll stream live on the VCSU YouTube channel.
Meet the Speakers
Macy Fridgen, who will graduate summa cum laude with a degree in business administration, has been an active member of the Viking Volleyball team. Her journey from Bismarck to VCSU has been impressive, both academically and athletically.
Dr. Nicholas Galt, an associate professor known for his dedication to students, also recently received VCSU’s Senior Faculty Excellence Award. He’s not just a teacher—he’s also a coach and a mentor to many students.
Leadership Transition
Dr. Allen Burgad is stepping in as the interim president starting January 1, 2026. He has a strong background in education, having served over 35 years in various roles, including assistant superintendent at one of North Dakota’s largest school districts. His experience is invaluable as VCSU looks for a new permanent president.
Personalized Learning Workshop Success
Recently, over 80 educators gathered at VCSU for a workshop focusing on personalized learning. This initiative, led by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, encourages teachers to tailor learning experiences to individual student needs. Participants shared strategies and resources, aiming to enhance student engagement. Personalized learning is gaining traction nationwide, highlighting its importance in modern education.
Spotlight on the AI Institute
VCSU’s AI Institute for Teaching and Learning was recently featured in a video by the North Dakota University System. The institute aims to help K-12 educators incorporate artificial intelligence in their classrooms responsibly. This initiative comes at a time when AI technology is rapidly evolving, making its application in education increasingly relevant.
Celebrating a Difference Maker
Janet Gierke, assistant director for financial aid, received the “Difference Maker” award this December. Nominated for her exceptional support and dedication, Janet exemplifies the spirit of community at VCSU. Her commitment to helping others truly stands out.
Merry & Bright Events
The Valley City community is hosting various events this season. On December 11, catch the Merry & Bright Choir Performance and the VC Community Band Concert at the LJR Center for the Arts—perfect opportunities to unwind and enjoy the holiday spirit.
Viking Sports Update
In sports, the Viking men’s and women’s basketball teams faced tough competition last weekend but showed tremendous effort. Meanwhile, the track and field team had an impressive start with significant achievements at their recent meet.
Cultural Engagement
VCSU is currently hosting The Sketchbook Project, a unique collection of artist sketchbooks that offers visitors an intimate look into the creative processes of artists from around the world. It’s available until January 16 and encourages hands-on exploration.
