CHARLESTON — If you’re a high school senior in West Virginia, don’t miss your chance to apply for two important financial aid programs for the 2025-26 school year: the Promise Scholarship and the West Virginia Higher Education Grant. The deadline for the Promise Scholarship, which offers $5,500 each year, is March 1. For the Higher Education Grant, worth $3,400 annually, applications are due by April 15.
“These financial aid programs create opportunities for our students,” said Sarah Armstrong Tucker, West Virginia’s chancellor of Higher Education. She encourages all seniors to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and apply for state aid. It’s not just for new students; anyone planning to attend college in the next year, including adults returning to school, should fill out the FAFSA to check their eligibility for the grant.
To be eligible for the Promise Scholarship, students from the class of 2025 must meet certain academic criteria:
- ACT: A composite score of 21, with at least 19 in English, math, science, and reading.
- SAT: A total score of 1080, with no less than 510 in math and evidence-based reading and writing.
You can find more details about the Promise Scholarship and its application process at cfwv.com/promise. The FAFSA, which is essential for accessing both state and federal aid, can be completed at fafsa.gov.
If you need help with your FAFSA or applications, call the state financial aid hotline at 877-987-7664. Additionally, students can join “Txt 4 Success,” a text-message college counseling program, by visiting cfwvconnect.com/txt-4-success/.
