The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is thrilled to announce that registration is now open for the 5th Annual Youth Climate Summit. This exciting event runs from November 17-22, 2025, and invites students aged 13-22 to dive into important global climate topics.
The week-long summit is designed to engage young minds, providing them with knowledge and tools for local climate action. Registration is open until October 22, 2025, at www.ycsbda.com.
As BUEI celebrates five years of the Youth Climate Summit (YCS), this program has evolved into a key platform for youth environmental leadership in Bermuda. Since its start in 2021, the summit has welcomed over 150 young participants each year, connecting them with local and global climate experts.
Traci Burgess, BUEI’s CEO, reflects on the impact of the initiative: “We aimed to create a space for young people to express their views on climate action. What we’ve achieved together with our partners has surpassed our expectations. YCS not only offers learning; it fosters a community of youth dedicated to environmental protection.”
This year will kick off with a dynamic opening session featuring Dr. Maynard Okereke, the “Hip Hop Scientist.” Dr. Okereke combines science with hip-hop culture, making complex environmental issues relatable to young audiences.
A significant new partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jamaica enhances this year’s summit. This collaboration opens doors for exciting programming, including a “Green Jobs of the Future” panel for alumni, focusing on careers in the green economy.
“We’re excited to connect young people with similar climate challenges across the Caribbean,” Burgess added. “This partnership creates valuable opportunities for education and inspiration.”
The milestone year will also feature special programming for past participants. Alumni can look forward to deep-dive sessions on environmental education and contributing to a youth-led climate action declaration.
Support from corporate and NGO partners is vital for YCS’s success. Founding partners like AXA XL and HSBC Bermuda have continually backed the initiative, providing resources and insights for young climate leaders.
Burgess emphasizes the urgency of climate action: “Bermuda faces real risks from climate change. Rising sea levels and increasing hurricane intensity affect us all. We must equip our youth to confront these challenges.”
During the summit, participants will engage with experts on topics like conservation and climate justice. YCS empowers students to find their voices and actively participate in meaningful change.
