Universal and Imax are trying something new by offering tickets for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, a whole year in advance. So far, it looks like a smart move.
Just hours after the tickets went on sale, Regal’s 70MM Imax showings were sold out. This quick sellout shows how much fans are looking forward to this film and how dedicated Regal’s Imax audience is.
Regal is one of the major cinema chains and has six out of 26 global Imax locations showing the film. Some sold-out spots include the Irvine Spectrum, Mall of Georgia, and King of Prussia in Pennsylvania.
An insider from AMC reported that New York City’s Lincoln Plaza sold out in just 15 minutes, and Universal Citywalk was gone in the first hour. In San Francisco, the AMC Metreon is the sole 70MM location for AMC.
For those still hoping to catch the film in California, a few options remain. You can find tickets at Hollywood TCL Chinese Theatre, Regal Haciena Crossings in Dublin, Regal Edwards Ontario, Esquire Imax in Sacramento, and the AMC Metreon.
Right now, only 22 locations across the U.S. and Canada are showing the film, with half already sold out. It’s interesting to note that exhibitors were initially allowed to sell just one 70MM showtime for the first four days after the movie’s release, from July 16th to July 19th, 2026. More screenings in various formats, including Imax and standard, will open up later.
This release approach raises questions about how it will affect box office sales in a year. There’s a growing trend in the industry for early ticket sales, especially for highly anticipated films. In a recent survey, 65% of filmgoers expressed a desire to buy tickets earlier to secure their seats.
With big names like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya in the cast, The Odyssey generates a lot of buzz. As excitement builds, it’ll be interesting to see how the sales unfold and what impact it will have on future film releases. For more details, check out the IMAX website.
