This fall is shaping up to be exciting for music lovers. After a summer filled with vibrant shows like Stern Grove and the diverse vibes at Outside Lands, we have the Portola Music Festival to look forward to. Scheduled for September 26-27 at Pier 80, this festival promises a rich mix of electronic music.
In its fifth year, Portola will kick off with Swedish pop star Robyn headlining Saturday. Known for hits like “Call Your Girlfriend” and her recent album “Sexistential,” Robyn’s performance is sure to be a highlight. She’ll be joined by Dog Blood, a collaboration between Skrillex and Boys Noize. Sunday will feature the popular Swedish House Mafia, known for their infectious big room tracks.
The lineup includes a blend of established acts and up-and-coming artists. Soulwax returns with their famed hi-fi Despacio dance club, a favorite from last year. Four Tet is back as well, along with new faces like electro-pop group Bassvictim and indie sleaze revivalists FCUKERS. Not to mention, icons like Tiesto, Tricky, Fatboy Slim, and DJ Shadow will also make an appearance, celebrating decades of influential music.
While there’s a noticeable absence of hip-hop, British rapper Skepta is a notable addition and is sure to draw crowds. Local talents such as Eriika, Clearcast, and Felly Fell will showcase the Bay Area’s vibrant scene.
Promoted by Goldenvoice, the same team behind Coachella, Portola aims to amplify electronic music in San Francisco. Their recent Club Darc series featured renowned artists and solidified their commitment to the genre.
Interestingly, electronic music festivals are gaining traction worldwide. According to a recent report by the International Music Summit, the electronic music market was valued at over $7.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow steadily. This surge indicates a growing global interest in electronic music, making festivals like Portola more significant.
As we gear up for Portola, it’s clear that electronic music continues to bring people together, offering a unique escape and an unforgettable experience.
