THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team is eager to bounce back as they prepare for two key games this weekend. They’ll face East Texas A&M on Saturday at 5 p.m. and then Northwestern State on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
Nicholls started strong this season with a 7-0 record but has hit a rough patch, losing their last five games. Despite this slump, they are tied for third place in the Southland Conference with a record of 8-13 overall and 7-5 in league play.
The team is struggling with scoring, averaging only 67 points in these five losses while shooting 38% from the field. Interestingly, their defense remains strong and is known for causing turnovers, though they’ve seen a dip in performance recently.
In their last outing, Zee Hamado led the team off the bench with 19 points. Jaylen Searles is the leading scorer for the season, averaging 14.6 points per game, while Jalik Dunkley follows closely with 13.6 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds. Sincere Malone, while scoring just two points in the last game, also logged eight assists and three steals, making him a standout in the league with 2.1 steals per game.
Nicholls recently faced New Orleans, suffering an 18-point loss that ended their five-game winning streak against the Privateers. They’ll look to maintain their strong record against East Texas A&M, having defeated them 80-58 earlier this year.
East Texas A&M, currently matching with Southeastern for the fewest conference wins at three, will be looking to improve their 4-3 home record.
Meanwhile, Northwestern State has lost their last three games but many have been tightly contested, with their last three games decided by just two points each.
Despite recent challenges, Nicholls remains focused on climbing back up in the standings and aims to find its offensive rhythm soon.
As fans rally behind their team, social media buzz around Nicholls basketball is heating up, with many sharing hopes for a turnaround in upcoming games. Keep an eye out for their upcoming home games against AMCC on February 7 and UTRGV on February 9.
