Don’t Miss the Action: Wheeling Football Hosts Charleston in MEC Home Showdown!

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Football team is on a winning streak as they face the University of Charleston this Saturday at 2 PM. Both teams are doing well in the Mountain East Conference (MEC), with the Cardinals at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. At home, they hope to improve on their 2-1 record.

Last week, the Cardinals had an exciting Homecoming Game against West Virginia Wesleyan. It was a nail-biter at first, with the score tied at 14 after the first quarter. But thanks to strong defense and some quick plays, the Cardinals pulled ahead. By halftime, they led 28-14. The second half showed their solid defense again, highlighted by a safety and a pick-six that pushed the score to 40-14.

Leonard Sherrod III stood out, grabbing two interceptions. He’s now tied for the most interceptions in the conference with four, all gained in just the last two games. He’s also among the best in pass break-ups and total tackles. Conor Fitzpatrick shone on special teams, converting all five of his PAT attempts and nailing a career-best 48-yard field goal.

After just six weeks of the regular season, the Cardinals find themselves among the top teams in the MEC. They’re half a game behind Frostburg State for the lead and tied with Charleston. The road ahead looks challenging, with top competitors for the next three weeks. The Cardinals are eager to build on last season’s fifth place finish.

Historically, this matchup sees the Cardinals trying to turn the tide against the Golden Eagles. They have yet to win in their four previous meetings. The last encounter ended in a 42-23 defeat for Wheeling, where former players had stellar performances on both sides.

As the Cardinals gear up for this crucial game, their focus remains strong. They’re determined to keep their winning momentum going and push towards the top of the conference standings.
