The Rivalry
Elon and Georgia State have met six times before, with the Panthers leading the series 4-2. Elon’s last victory was in 2023, where they won decisively 6-1 at home. Notable players like Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic contributed significantly in singles and doubles during that match.
When Elon faced South Carolina State last, they swept the match 7-0 in 2024, which showcased their strong performance at home.
Recent Performance
The Phoenix recently faced Florida Gulf Coast on February 27, losing in a close match, 4-2. They managed to secure the doubles point through solid performances from new doubles team pairs. Nick Fisk and Charles Pilet won on Court 2, marking their first dual doubles victory, while Antinheimo and Rafael Ymer clinched the doubles point at No. 3.
Despite their recent struggles, the team has shown resilience. Antinheimo nearly staged a comeback in singles, demonstrating their competitive spirit.
Team Insights
This season, senior Veljko Krstic stands out, having been recognized with All-CAA honors last year. He is joined by Rafael Ymer and Jack Curtis, who are also noted for their strong performances. Ymer has made a vivid impact this season, clinching five singles wins, backed by impressive showings against ranked opponents like Texas A&M.
Additionally, the Phoenix are looking to continue their tradition of success, aiming to reach their fifth consecutive CAA championship match this year. Coach Maciek Sykut has fostered a competitive team environment, as they prepare to face two more rivals.
Scouting the Opponents
Georgia State: The Panthers are currently 3-5, with their most recent match resulting in a loss against Mercer. Gabriele Datei is a key player for them, holding the No. 1 singles and doubles position.
South Carolina State: The Bulldogs have struggled this season, standing at 1-6. They will need to recover quickly after a tough loss to Wake Forest before they take on Elon.
Stay tuned and support the Phoenix as they hit the courts this weekend!
