Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men’s Soccer team has had a challenging season so far, with a record of 1-8-1 (0-6-1). They’ve faced tough competition, playing six of their first ten games away from home. As the season nears its end, they’re set to play three of their next five matches at home, starting this Sunday against the University of Charleston at 1 PM.
Last week, the Cardinals faced Concord in Athens, West Virginia, where they struggled but showed a fighting spirit. The match began positively for Wheeling when they scored first in the 22nd minute, thanks to Pablo Prieto. However, Concord responded with two quick goals before halftime, leaving the Cardinals trailing 2-1. Overall, shots were evenly matched, but the Cardinals only managed two shots in the second half, one on target. Concord sealed the game with an additional goal late in the match, ending the game 3-1.
Pablo Prieto, a standout player for the Cardinals, found the back of the net for the second time this season. His efficiency is notable, with a shooting percentage of .333 so far. Prieto plays a vital role not just in defense but also in boosting the offense when needed.
Diego Marquez returned as the goalkeeper and faced five shots, bringing his save percentage to an impressive 73.3% for the season. He has been a key player in the team’s defense, aiming for more saves as they head into the final weeks. Fellow defender Davin Starkie also contributed effectively during the match, showing strong defensive skills while additionally taking a shot on goal.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals will have more chances to win at home. Historically, they perform better in familiar territory, and this stretch could be what they need to turn the season around. With just three and a half weeks left, they’re seven points shy of a playoff spot in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). With determination, they’re ready to reclaim some ground and aim for a place in the tournament.
This Sunday, the matchup against Charleston holds significant weight. This will be the 49th meeting between the two teams. Historically, the Golden Eagles hold an advantage in the series with 34 wins compared to Wheeling’s 11, which makes the Cardinals eager to make a change. Their last victory against Charleston dates back to the 2015 season, and they are determined to end a 21-game losing streak. In their previous match this season, Wheeling came close, losing 1-0, despite a solid performance from Marquez in goal.
The upcoming game promises excitement and is a chance for the Cardinals to push for a much-needed victory. As they step onto the field at Bishop Schmitt Field this weekend, the stakes are high, and their determination is stronger than ever.
