New York is buzzing about a fresh food festival this summer: The Great Nosh! It’s not just any food event; it’s a special picnic featuring unique dishes from some of the city’s top restaurants.
Set to take place on Governors Island on Sunday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Great Nosh is designed to celebrate food and Jewish culture. Naama Shefi, founder of the Jewish Food Society and author of the upcoming cookbook “The Jewish Holiday Table,” is behind this exciting initiative. “I’m really passionate about picnics,” Shefi shared. Growing up on a kibbutz in Israel, she often enjoyed community meals outdoors. Now, she hopes to recreate that sense of togetherness in New York.
The festival promises an array of mouthwatering creations. Chefs from renowned spots will collaborate to create innovative menu items. Expect a fusion of flavors like a roti and corned beef Reuben from Thai Diner and Katz’s Delicatessen, or black-and-white cookie cheesecake sandwiches with cherry jam crafted by pastry chef Caroline Schiff and Junior’s. There will also be a delightful pairing of schnitzel and fish and chips, complete with unique sauces from popular Philadelphia eatery Zahav and local favorite Dame.
In addition to these tasty collaborations, drinkers can enjoy a pop-up wine bar from Brooklyn’s The Four Horsemen. The picnic experience includes a blanket, utensils, and complimentary water, all for about $40. Families with kids ages 6 to 12 can grab discounted tickets for around $20, while little ones under 5 can join for free.
Experts highlight the significance of food festivals in fostering community. According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, 75% of diners enjoy trying new foods at these gatherings. This suggests that events like The Great Nosh not only bring delicious food but also promote social interaction and cultural exchange.
Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to bring their picnic blankets to enjoy the food under the sun. The festival will go ahead rain or shine, adding to the anticipation of a fantastic day filled with flavors, fun, and connection.
Shefi hopes this inaugural festival will become an annual highlight in New York’s food scene, celebrating the diversity of Jewish culture through food. It seems this summer picnic will be more than just a meal; it’s a chance to gather, celebrate, and enjoy the vibrant community of New York.
