Buddhist Monks Walk for Peace: A Journey of Mindfulness and Unity
In Washington, D.C., thousands gathered to welcome a group of Buddhist monks completing a remarkable 108-day, 2,300-mile walk from Texas to the nation’s capital. This event, held at the Washington National Cathedral, brought together leaders from various faiths.
Venerable Bhikkhu Paññākāra, during the event dubbed “A Sacred Stop on the Walk for Peace,” emphasized that compassion can bridge different beliefs. “It’s a first for us to walk together for peace,” he said, highlighting the importance of unity in difficult times.
The monks, part of a Vietnamese Theravada Buddhist tradition, aimed not only to walk but to raise awareness about peace. Each monk practiced Vipassana meditation, bringing mindfulness to the forefront of their mission. Paññākāra urged attendees to unlock their inner peace rather than simply relying on external sources. He humorously reminded them to put away their phones first thing in the morning—a simple yet impactful tip in our distraction-heavy world.
At the event, a crowd filled with supporters cheered, held flowers, and wore handmade “Walk for Peace” clothing. Reflecting on their journey, the monks encountered harsh winter weather and even a tragic accident, where one monk lost a leg. Yet, they were met with kindness—hospitable gestures, food, and prayers along the way.
Kimberly Bassett, the D.C. Secretary of State, presented the monks with a proclamation. “You have united people from all walks of life, showing we can choose understanding over division,” she stated.
The monks’ message resonated with many who had followed their journey online. Susan Dorr traveled 11 hours from Maine to witness their arrival. “Mindfulness doesn’t require belief,” she said. “It’s simple and available to everyone.” Danny Latifzadeh from Maryland echoed her sentiments, stating, “This experience crosses cultural and religious boundaries. It transcends time and history.”
After their moment at the cathedral, the monks continued their pilgrimage to the Lincoln Memorial. Their journey reminds us that no matter our background, we all share a common path toward peace and understanding.
