The final full moon of the year, called the “cold moon,” lit up the skies earlier this week. This stunning event follows two earlier supermoons: the harvest moon in October and the beaver moon in November.
A supermoon happens when a full moon aligns with its closest point to Earth. This makes it appear larger and brighter than usual. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, December’s full moon is named for its chilly timing as it occurs during the coldest season. It’s also called the Long Night Moon because it shines during the longest nights of the year.
NASA notes that supermoons occur about three to four times each year. When the moon is closest to Earth, it can look up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when it’s farthest away.
Looking ahead, the next full supermoon will be the “wolf moon” on January 3. Historically, this name comes from the time of year when wolves are often heard howling.
