On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Corn Moon will shine brightly across the sky. This full moon marks the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. If you’re in North America, look for it at dusk as it rises in the east. Interestingly, just hours before, there will be a total lunar eclipse seen from parts of Asia and Australia. This eclipse will turn the moon a deep red, often called a “blood moon.”
Here’s when the Corn Moon will appear in different cities:
- New York: Sunset at 7:20 p.m., moonrise at 7:22 p.m. EDT.
- Los Angeles: Sunset at 7:12 p.m., moonrise at 7:19 p.m. PDT.
- London: Sunset at 7:32 p.m., moonrise at 7:44 p.m. BST on September 8.
The Corn Moon gets its name because it’s time for harvesting corn in many regions. Interestingly, although this moon is called the Corn Moon, September’s full moon is often confused with the Harvest Moon, which happens closest to the autumn equinox.
Regarding the lunar eclipse, only certain parts of the world will experience it. According to statistics, about 4.9 billion people will have the opportunity to witness the entire eclipse. The totality phase, where the moon turns completely red, will last for 82 minutes. The entire event will unfold over five hours and 27 minutes.
Interestingly, lunar eclipses usually come in pairs. So, just two weeks after this total lunar eclipse, on September 21, a partial solar eclipse will be visible from New Zealand and parts of the South Pacific.
This event is part of a series of fascinating celestial happenings. The Corn Moon is the ninth of twelve full moons in 2025, and while three of those will be “supermoons,” October’s full moon is expected to be the year’s first “supermoon” and also the Harvest Moon. Historical records show that many cultures have named moons based on seasonal changes and agricultural practices, revealing a rich connection between nature and humanity.
