This weekend, you can witness a special sight in the night sky. Six planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Neptune, and Uranus—will align and become visible. This rare event is not something you see every day.
To catch a glimpse of Neptune and Uranus, you might want to bring binoculars or a telescope. The best time to look is in the early evening. In the UK, around 5:45 PM works well, and at 6:00 PM for the US. Try finding a clear spot to the west, like a hilltop, for the best view.
Dr. Megan Argo, an astrophysicist at the University of Lancashire, explained that this alignment occurs because of the planets’ orbits. Each planet moves at a different speed around the sun, making their paths shift against the stars. Seeing six planets together is rare—typically, four or five can be spotted more easily. The last time seven were visible was last year, but the next six-planet lineup won’t happen again until 2040.
When you look up, Jupiter will be high in the southeast, while the others will form a line near the horizon in the west. Venus will be the brightest of the group, while Mercury will be fainter. Saturn and Neptune will sit just above them, with Uranus appearing faintly below a cluster of stars known as the Seven Sisters.
For stargazers in the southern hemisphere, the view will be similar, though reversed. In Australia, for example, Jupiter will be in the north, while Uranus will appear in the northwest. Be quick, though! Venus will set by 7:15 PM local time.
In addition to the planets, the moon will also be in the vicinity for a few days, enhancing the spectacle. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the wonders of our solar system.
