C/2025 R3 was first spotted in September 2025 by the Pan-STARRS telescopes in Hawaii. Since then, it’s brightened a lot as it approaches the sun. Many comet fans are eager to see if it turns into a spectacular visible comet this year.
Currently, the comet’s brightness is estimated at a magnitude of +4.7. This means it can be seen as a small blur of light without a telescope in dark areas. To put it simply, the lower the magnitude number, the brighter it appears—our eyes can catch objects as faint as +6.5 under ideal conditions.
If you want to get a closer look, use binoculars to see the comet’s glowing head or try long-exposure photography to capture its stunning tail. As the comet approaches perihelion—its closest point to the sun—on the night of April 19, it’s expected to shine even brighter.
To find the comet, look for the four bright stars of the Great Square of Pegasus rising in the eastern sky. You’ll spot C/2025 R3 about five degrees above the lowest star, Algenib. That’s roughly the width of your three middle fingers held at arm’s length.
Once it passes perihelion, C/2025 R3 will shift to the Southern Hemisphere night sky, making its way through constellations like Pisces and Orion. It won’t be seen again in our lifetimes.
