DOWNEY – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has given the green light to declare the City of STEM + Los Angeles Maker Faire as the Official Science Festival of Los Angeles County. This motion was led by Supervisor Janice Hahn, with support from Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell.
This exciting annual event is co-hosted by the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey and the Los Angeles Public Library. Mark your calendars for April 12, as this year’s festival will take place at Exposition Park for the very first time.
“Some of our nation’s greatest achievements in science, math, and engineering happened right here in Los Angeles County,” Hahn said. “City of STEM inspires thousands of future scientists and innovators.”
The City of STEM festival is a hub of creativity, drawing over 200 organizations and an estimated 20,000 attendees. It features expert discussions, workshops, engaging performances, and live music. Since its launch in 2015, this event has evolved. In 2023, it joined forces with the Los Angeles Maker Faire, where inventors showcase their projects.
Mitchell expressed excitement about the festival’s new location: “Exposition Park is a convenient spot, perfect for connecting science, culture, and the arts. I look forward to seeing more young people from diverse backgrounds exploring STEM opportunities.”
Benjamin Dickow, the President and Executive Director of the Columbia Memorial Space Center, shared his appreciation for the county’s recognition. “LA County has a rich history in STEM, from building moon-bound spaceships to early internet development at UCLA. City of STEM continues that legacy, bringing awareness to science and innovation across Southern California,” he said.
Opened in 2009, the Columbia Memorial Space Center stands at the former site of NASA’s Downey facility, where Apollo modules were constructed. It aims to inspire the next generation of explorers and thinkers.
