At least 27 people in West Baltimore were hospitalized due to suspected drug overdoses. According to officials, seven individuals are in critical condition, but thankfully, no deaths have been reported.

This incident occurred near an intersection in the Penn North area on Thursday morning. The specific drugs involved haven’t been disclosed, highlighting a troubling trend. The U.S. has seen drug overdose deaths soar over the past two decades, with a staggering 500% increase from 1999 to 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Experts note that there have been three waves of overdose causes: the first wave involved prescription opioids, the second focused on heroin, and now we’re seeing a rise in synthetic opioids like fentanyl. These substances are often mixed with illegal drugs, increasing the risk of overdose.

Baltimore’s state attorney, Ivan Bates, called this incident a painful reminder of the city’s ongoing struggle with the opioid crisis. Fire Chief James Wallace mentioned that emergency services responded to numerous calls from people suspected of overdosing. Many individuals were found sprawled across two intersecting streets, subway platforms, and alleyways.

The Baltimore Police shared updates on social media, advising people to avoid the area as multiple streets were closed off for emergency response.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore stated that his team was working closely with state agencies, first responders, and city officials. He expressed gratitude for those who quickly reported the situation and are helping the community.

In a separate communication, Mayor Brandon Scott provided advice to drug users, emphasizing the importance of not using alone and carrying naloxone, a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose.
