DP World has kicked off construction of Bharat Mart, a significant marketplace in Dubai that aims to boost trade between India and global markets. This ambitious project will focus on both B2B and B2C transactions and is expected to open by late 2026.

Spanning 2.7 million square feet in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza), Bharat Mart will kick off with an initial phase of 1.3 million square feet. The foundation stone was laid virtually with prominent figures like Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince, and Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, present.

Bharat Mart will have 1,500 showrooms and more than 700,000 square feet dedicated to warehousing, office spaces, and meeting areas. Uniquely, a section will support businesses led by women from India, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity.

Sheikh Hamdan emphasized how Dubai’s advanced infrastructure is perfectly aligned with India’s trade vision. With over 2,300 Indian companies in Jafza, he stated that Bharat Mart will enhance access for Indian goods in international markets, reinforcing the UAE-India trade connection.

The marketplace is strategically located just one kilometer from Jebel Ali Port and 15 kilometers from Al Maktoum International Airport. This prime position, coupled with access to the Etihad Rail network, will facilitate rapid export capabilities for Indian businesses. It will allow exporters to reach over 150 maritime destinations and 300 cities through air travel.

In discussions about the project’s objectives, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the group chairman and CEO of DP World, noted the goal of reaching $100 billion in non-oil trade between India and the UAE by 2030. He sees Bharat Mart as a crucial component in this mission, aimed at unlocking new markets and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Piyush Goyal called Bharat Mart “game-changing,” suggesting it will create new opportunities for Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to tap into international markets, including Africa.

Recent reports indicate that the India-UAE trade relationship continues to strengthen, with trade increasing by about 11% in the last year, totaling around $60 billion. This growth serves as a backdrop for the launch of Bharat Mart, which is poised to further capitalize on this upward trend.
