Dr. Charity Evans Named First-Ever Wright Professor: A Milestone in Medical Excellence

Dr. Charity Evans has a new title: the first Ellen and Stavely Wright Professor in Acute Care Surgery at UNMC. This role highlights her leadership in trauma care.

The professorship comes from the Wright family in Omaha. Stavely Wright was treated at UNMC after a serious horse riding accident in 2017 that left him with a broken neck. His recovery is a testament to the exceptional care he received from the trauma team there.

“We are honored to support the first endowed professorship in acute care surgery,” said Ellen and Stavely Wright. They believe this will help better trauma care in the future. Dr. Evans appreciates their support, stating it’s an investment in trauma care that will help many patients across Nebraska.

The funding from this gift will help recruit talented faculty, provide better education in new technologies, and increase research opportunities. “This will directly improve patient care,” Dr. Evans noted.

David Mercer, chair of the Department of Surgery, praised Dr. Evans and her team, highlighting that this honor also raises the division’s profile, allowing for more educational and research efforts.

Trauma care may not be on people’s minds until they need it. It’s crucial, especially since trauma is the leading cause of death for those aged 44 and under. Having a highly trained team and quick access to expert care can change lives in these critical moments.

This endowed fund ensures ongoing support for acute care. Each year, it will provide a stipend for the recipient’s work. Thanks to the Wrights’ generosity, Dr. Evans believes this will positively impact many lives and strengthen the community.

The gift is part of the Only in Nebraska: A Campaign for Our University’s Future, aiming to raise $3 billion to support various educational initiatives at the University of Nebraska, including new professorships.
