On the opening night of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway, two drivers had their victories taken away after post-race inspections. William Sawalich, who raced in the Super Late Models, and Conner Jones from the Pro Late Models both celebrated wins that were later disqualified. The official victories went to Carson Brown and Hunter Wright instead.
During the Super Late Models race, Sawalich fought hard against Cole Butcher, but his excitement turned to disappointment when his car was found to be too wide during the tech inspection. Chief Technical Inspector Rick Turner explained, “After each race, we check all the cars. I’ve seen this happen before, and I made sure to measure the width carefully. Unfortunately, Sawalich’s car failed the inspection twice.” Turner acknowledged the hard work and money involved in racing, but emphasized the importance of following the rules.
Conner Jones also faced disqualification after winning the Pro Late Model race due to a carburetor issue. His team believes the carburetor is the same one they used to win previous races at the track, and they are considering appeals against the decision.
The World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing continues this Saturday night with more exciting races, including the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and a Pro Late Model feature. Fans can watch all nine nights of racing live through FloRacing.
