A Russian drone hit an apartment building in Romania, injuring two people. This incident occurred after a nearby Ukrainian port was attacked. The Romanian defense ministry confirmed that it was part of ongoing drone strikes by Russia.
On the night of May 28-29, Russia resumed targeting civilian areas in Ukraine. The drone struck a building in Galati, close to the Ukrainian border. Officials reported that the drone entered Romanian airspace around 1:54 a.m. but vanished from radar south of Galati.
Video footage showed significant damage to the roof of the apartment building. Emergency teams quickly arrived to assess the situation. Galati lies near Izmail, a major Ukrainian port often targeted by Russian attacks.
Interestingly, while the drone crash took place, Ukrainian sources noted that Izmail was also under attack from Russian drones. Romania’s defense ministry stated that their radar tracked several drones in their airspace. They dispatched two F-16 fighter jets, and the pilots received orders to engage any incoming threats.
Romania’s role as a NATO member adds to the importance of this incident. NATO operates under a principle of collective defense, meaning an attack on one member is seen as an attack on all. This has led to increased vigilance from neighboring NATO countries regarding Russian assaults.
Since the start of Russia’s drone operations aimed at Ukraine’s ports, Romania has reported 28 instances of drones breaching its airspace. This number highlights the growing tensions in the region.
Historically, this is not the first time Romanian airspace has been involved in such incidents. In September 2025, NATO jets intercepted Russian drones flying in Polish airspace during similar attacks. The NATO alliance condemned these acts as dangerous provocations.
Recent surveys show that many communities in Romania are increasingly concerned about their safety due to the ongoing conflict. Public sentiment reflects growing fears of being drawn into the broader conflict as drone strikes become more common.
As the situation evolves, the focus on air security and defense is likely to intensify in Romania and other nearby nations.
