Dublin City Schools is stepping up its support for mental health this year. The district has added more mental health specialists than ever before, responding to a growing need. Julie Fouche, who has worked in education for over 20 years, is one of these new specialists. She believes that mental health is crucial for student success.
“This role lets me use my teaching experience to help kids in a different way,” Julie said. She participated in a unique program that allows teachers to earn a Master’s in Social Work through a partnership with Ohio State University. The district covered the costs, supporting staff to take on these vital roles.
This year, Dublin Schools now has 40 mental health specialists, which is a significant increase from the previous 18. Every school has at least one specialist available five days a week, a rarity in many districts. “We’re lucky to be here every day,” said Morgan Lushinsky, another specialist. This availability allows them to build strong connections with students.
Recognizing when a child needs support can be challenging. Lushinsky notes that parents should watch for sudden behavior changes—like a usually outgoing child withdrawing or vice versa. Being involved in your child’s life makes it easier to notice these changes.
Fouche adds that today’s social media landscape can impact family dynamics. “We often spend time on our phones instead of connecting,” she explained. She encourages families to unplug and engage in simple activities together, like taking walks or riding bikes. This helps build a bond that encourages open communication about feelings.
Research shows that emotional support plays a significant role in academic success. A 2022 study found that students who feel connected to their schools perform better and have lower stress levels. Having mental health specialists available daily can help foster these connections.
With an increase in mental health issues among youth—especially noted during the pandemic—Dublin Schools is making significant strides in providing timely support. As the conversation about mental well-being continues to grow, schools like Dublin are leading the way in ensuring every student has the resources they need to thrive.
