The Anaheim Ducks have secured center Mason McTavish with a six-year contract, extending through the 2030-31 NHL season. At just 22 years old, McTavish has made a mark with 140 points and 170 penalty minutes across 229 NHL games.
Last season, McTavish achieved personal bests with 22 goals, 30 assists, and 52 points, making him a key player for the Ducks. He led the team in power-play goals and finished strong in scoring and faceoff percentage. Notably, he became the fifth-youngest player in Ducks history to rack up 50 points in a single season, following in the footsteps of Ducks legend Paul Kariya who also scored 50 goals before turning 21.
“Mason is a key part of our team,” stated Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek. He praised McTavish for his skill and competitive spirit, expressing confidence in his potential to grow into a top player as the Ducks aim for long-term success.
McTavish made waves on his NHL debut on October 13, 2021, becoming the youngest Duck to score a goal. He continued to impress in his first full season in 2022-23, ranking fourth for rookie points in Ducks history. In the following season, he maintained his scoring pace with 19 goals in just 64 games.
“Today is an exciting day for me and my family,” McTavish shared about his long-term commitment to the team. He believes in the Ducks’ vision and is eager to help the team become a playoff contender.
Drafted third overall by Anaheim in 2021, McTavish excelled in the OHL before making the jump to the NHL. He earned recognition in the OHL for his outstanding performance, contributing significantly to his team’s success, including a championship run and a standout role in the Memorial Cup.
On the international stage, McTavish has made headlines as well. He helped Canada clinch gold at the 2022 World Junior Championship, where he was named MVP, leading all players with 17 points. His contribution to Canada at various championships showcases his skill and dedication to the sport.
Recent statistics show a rising interest in young NHL talent, with teams increasingly investing in the potential of players like McTavish. This trend reflects a wider shift in how organizations view the importance of nurturing youth to create competitive teams. As McTavish continues to develop, he embodies the Ducks’ hope for a bright future.
