John Blackwell, a talented guard from Wisconsin, has chosen to play at Duke. He shared his decision with ESPN on Tuesday, explaining that his visit to the campus felt just right. Blackwell connected with Coach Jon Scheyer during their conversations, which helped him realize Duke was the ideal fit for him.
Standing at 6-foot-4, Blackwell had a standout year, averaging 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He also showcased his three-point shooting, hitting nearly 39% of his attempts. His postseason performance was especially impressive, scoring 34 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a crucial Big Ten tournament game against Washington. Even when his team faced a tough loss in the NCAA tournament, Blackwell still managed to score 22 points against High Point.
Represented by Life Sports Agency, Blackwell sees Duke as a place where he can shine and improve. He expressed excitement about the freedom Coach Scheyer is promising. “They want me to help win a national championship and potentially become a draft pick—that’s what I’ve always dreamed of,” said Blackwell.
At Duke, he’ll join a backcourt featuring Caleb Foster and Cayden Boozer, plus stellar recruit Deron Rippey Jr. Blackwell aims to take on more leadership. “With so many talented guards, we’re going to push each other. A deep backcourt like this is a matchup nightmare for opponents,” he said.
Duke is in a period of change, especially after their Elite Eight loss to UConn. Key players like projected top-five pick Cameron Boozer are leaving, while others are considering their future. However, Duke received some good news when Patrick Ngongba II announced he would return. The Blue Devils are also bringing in a recruiting class rated among the best in the country, which includes three top-25 seniors.
The addition of Blackwell is crucial for Duke. Coach Scheyer needed an experienced scorer to stabilize the offense. Blackwell’s decision underscores Duke’s reputation for developing professional-level talent. “Duke has a strong history of producing pros, and that was a huge factor for me,” Blackwell concluded.
