Duke University’s Balus, Hovde, and Kimchi Gear Up for NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship Showdown!

Orlando, Fla. – The Duke women’s tennis team is excited about their participation in the 2025 NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship at the USTA National Campus. Three talented players—Irina Balus, Liv Hovde, and Shavit Kimchi—are ready to showcase their skills this week.

Irina Balus, from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, is returning for her second NCAA Singles Championship. Ranked No. 14 in the nation, she earned her spot by reaching the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American tournament. Last year, Balus faced a tough challenge, losing in the first round. This time, she kicks off her journey against Eugenia Zozaya Menendez from Southern California in the round of 64 on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Liv Hovde, hailing from Daniel Island, South Carolina, is making her debut in both singles and doubles. She secured her singles entry by winning a playoff match against Marina Genis Salas from Virginia. Currently ranked No. 49, Hovde has a solid 6-4 record this fall. She will go up against Zuzanna Kubacha of Baylor, ranked No. 102, in her first match on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

In doubles, Hovde pairs with Kimchi, and together they have triumphed in all three of their matches at the ITA Sectionals, earning their spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship. They boast an impressive 8-1 record this fall. The duo will face Mao Mushika and Greta Greco Lucchina from California in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
