The Duke women’s golf team is gearing up for the Windy City Collegiate Classic this week. Ranked sixth in the preseason, the Blue Devils will play at the Glen View Club in Golf, Illinois, on September 29-30.
This tournament attracts several strong teams, including Northwestern, Arizona State (individuals only), and UCLA. The format will consist of 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday.
Duke’s lineup features graduate student Andie Smith, junior Katie Li, sophomores Carla De Troia and Anna Cañado Espinal, and freshman Avery McCrery. Notably, freshman Rianne Malixi won’t join the team as she competes in Singapore for the World Amateur Team Championship.
The Blue Devils recently showcased their talent at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, finishing strong with a 3-under 285 in the final round. Smith stood out, shooting a remarkable 5-under 67. Both Malixi and McCrery also performed admirably, with McCrery finishing even-par.
Interestingly, participation in collegiate golf tournaments like this can significantly impact players’ careers, often acting as a stepping stone to professional golf. According to the NCAA, around 1% of female high school golfers will play at the Division I level, making this experience crucial for those aspiring to go pro.
