The Duquesne University women’s golf team kicked off their 2026 Atlantic 10 Championship on a strong note in Orlando, Florida, finishing the first round with a score of 332, placing them fourth overall.
Richmond took the lead with a solid score of 307, creating an 11-stroke gap over Dayton, which scored 318. Loyola Chicago sits in third place with 322, while Saint Joseph’s and La Salle trail with scores of 360 and 383, respectively. This marks Duquesne’s second appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship, a significant milestone for the program.
Individually, sophomore Sasha Petrochko made a notable impact, scoring 79 and landing in the top ten. She is tied for sixth place alongside Richmond’s Addie Doroh. The top spot belongs to Maya Beasley from Richmond, who shot a 73. Petrochko, showing her skill on the back nine, recorded two birdies on par-three holes. Her performance here highlights the importance of precision and strategy in golf.
Senior Lindsey Powanda and sophomore Abby Slankster are tied for 14th after both carded 84. Powanda’s lone birdie came on a challenging 479-yard par five, while Slankster showcased consistency with a team-high 10 pars. Freshman Lilly Powell joined the team on the course, finishing with an 85, while fellow freshman Ashley von Behren wrapped up her first round with a score of 97.
As the tournament progresses, it’s notable how players adapt and learn from each round. According to a recent survey by the National Golf Foundation, women’s golf participation has grown by 27% in the past decade, with collegiate competitions gaining popularity. This growth may contribute to increased engagement and stronger team performances, like those seen at Duquesne.
The second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with von Behren teeing off first for the Dukes. Golf is more than just a game; it’s a journey that challenges athletes to refine their skills and mental toughness.
