CHARLOTTE — In a thrilling matchup, Duke’s top-ranked basketball team faced a tough challenge against Florida State. Down two key players and trailing by eight in the second half, coach Jon Scheyer gathered his team for a timeout. He urged them to seize the moment.
“It was a chance to show what we’re really made of,” Scheyer said, reflecting on the critical moment.
The Blue Devils responded, launching a stunning 19-2 run. They edged out Florida State 80-79, securing a spot in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
Isaiah Evans delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 32 points, while Cameron Boozer added another double-double to his record.
With time winding down, Florida State’s Robert McCray V nearly clinched victory with a last-second shot, but it didn’t fall.
“Our character shone through in that moment,” Scheyer added, emphasizing the team’s resilience.
Despite missing point guard Caleb Foster and center Patrick Ngongba, who are sidelined with injuries, Duke showed its depth. Foster injured his foot in the last regular-season game, and Ngongba missed his second consecutive match.
“No excuses—next man up,” Boozer said. “This win shows we can fight through tough situations.”
Florida State clawed back within one point late, but Duke maintained control throughout. Evans distinguished himself with sharp shooting, hitting seven three-pointers and making 11 of 20 shots overall.
“He’s been hitting big shots everywhere we go,” Scheyer noted about Evans, who particularly shines when playing in his hometown.
Boozer also had a strong game with 23 points and 10 rebounds, marking his 18th double-double this season. While Cayden Boozer struggled with his shot, he still made a crucial dunk when it mattered most.
Florida State’s coach, Luke Loucks, acknowledged Duke’s strength. “They are a well-rounded team with talent and toughness,” he said.
Both players from Florida State, Lajae Jones and McCray, scored 28 and 25 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough for victory. Duke’s dominance on the boards was significant, with 22 offensive rebounds leading to 24 second-chance points.
Maliq Brown, named the ACC Sixth Man and Defensive Player of the Year, contributed immensely with his rebounding and defensive efforts.
This wild back-and-forth game featured eight ties and 15 lead changes, showcasing both teams’ fighting spirit.
Duke will face either North Carolina or Clemson in the semifinals on Friday, eager to continue their championship quest.
