Michigan has extended coach Dusty May’s contract for multiple years, as confirmed by athletic director Warde Manuel. This announcement comes after an impressive season for the Wolverines, ranked No. 12, just before a big game against their rivals, No. 14 Michigan State.
May shared that the timing of the announcement was intentional. “We’ve picked up positive momentum as a team and in recruiting, and we didn’t want it to be a distraction,” he said. This contract extension reflects the team’s strong performance.
The details of the new contract include:
- An extension that runs through spring 2030
- A $1 million increase in annual salary
- Raises for the entire Michigan men’s basketball coaching staff
- More investment in program resources, especially for NIL opportunities
- A buyout clause that increases to $7.5 million
Addressing speculation about the Indiana coaching position, May confirmed he is committed to Michigan. “I’m very, very happy,” he stated, emphasizing his satisfaction with his current role, especially since he previously worked as a student manager at Indiana under coach Bob Knight.
Manuel expressed his enthusiasm about the new agreement, highlighting May’s dedication and success. “His commitment to our university and the basketball program has exceeded our expectations,” he said, looking forward to a bright future together.
As of now, the Wolverines lead the Big Ten standings at 20-5 and are working toward a strong seed for the NCAA Tournament, following a rough previous season. Before joining Michigan, May made headlines by leading Florida Atlantic University to the Final Four in 2023 as a No. 9 seed.
