Elaine Hendrix took the stage on Dancing With the Stars for an unforgettable performance themed around Wicked. After a rocky start during “Dedication Night,” where she and partner Alan Bersten scored low for their foxtrot, Hendrix made a powerful comeback.
This time, they tackled “Defying Gravity,” a song that speaks to overcoming obstacles. Alan shared that they wanted to capture the essence of Elphaba, aiming to show how Hendrix could trust herself even with her challenging past. She bravely opened up about her struggles, including having a titanium plate in her foot due to a serious car accident. During practice, the emotional weight of it all brought her to tears.
Hendrix expressed, “It’s tough knowing my body has limits, but this song is about pushing through them.” She highlighted the journey of determination it takes to reach one’s goals, underlining her resilience.
Dressed in sleek black, she entered the ballroom, echoing the dramatic flair of the musical. Her routine featured dynamic lifts and turns, culminating in a stunning moment where she soared into the air, much like Elphaba.
The audience erupted in applause as she gracefully landed. Carrie Ann Inaba was visibly moved, stating, “When you danced, my heart just burst into tears. You captured a moment that will stay with us.”
Director Jon M. Chu, who worked on both Wicked and its sequel, praised her performance as a display of “pure ascension.” He reflected on the significance of surrendering to one’s power, a core theme in the musical.
Julianne Hough, another judge, also commended Hendrix, remarking on her tenacity. Bruno Tonioli excitedly stated, “Darling, you went into orbit tonight!” He noted that she tackled the toughest number of the evening and excelled.
Afterward, Hendrix, buoyed by her performance, said she felt like she was truly “defying gravity.” Bersten praised her incredible spirit, saying, “Her determination is inspiring, and I feel lucky to dance with her.”
The couple scored an impressive 36, their best score yet. However, it was not quite enough for the top of the leaderboard, as Whitney Leavitt from Secret Lives of Mormon Wives scored a season-high 39.
This season of Dancing With the Stars has been filled with emotional stories and impressive performances, making it a highlight for many viewers. As of now, the show airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu.
