Season Kickoff: Edgewood Volleyball Faces Tough Competition

The Edgewood University women’s volleyball team kicked off their 2025 season in Colorado Springs. They played two challenging matches against strong opponents: East Texas Baptist University, ranked No. 14, and UW-Stevens Point.

In their first match, the Eagles faced East Texas Baptist. From the start, the Tigers took control, winning in straight sets: 25-17, 25-17, and 25-15. The Eagles fought hard, especially in the second set, briefly leading 8-7. However, the Tigers quickly regained momentum, demonstrating their strength with superior hitting statistics. They outperformed Edgewood with a hitting percentage of .416 compared to .122.

Graycee Mosley stood out for the Tigers with 14 kills and 10 digs. Anita Hancock contributed significantly with 8 kills and 5 blocks. For the Eagles, Katie Borchert led her team with 10 kills. Kate Gunderson also shined, contributing to the game with 12 assists, seven digs, and four aces.

In their second match against UW-Stevens Point, the Eagles made a remarkable comeback. The Pointers took an early lead, winning the first two sets. The Eagles didn’t give up. They rallied back, winning the next three sets in dramatic fashion: 25-15, 27-25, and 15-6, securing a 3-2 victory.

Borchert excelled again with 18 kills, while her teammate Nida Zukauskaite added 12 kills. Payton Millin and Natalie Murphy made significant contributions with strong defensive plays, blocking seven and six shots, respectively. The Eagles improved their hitting percentage in the final set to .200, while the Pointers struggled at -.174.

Social media buzzed with excitement after the match. Edgewood’s official Twitter account highlighted the comeback, emphasizing Borchert’s impressive performance. Fans celebrated the team’s tenacity, showcasing the community’s support.

This season opener holds historical significance, marking the first matchup between Edgewood and East Texas Baptist. Moreover, Edgewood has now secured consecutive wins against UW-Stevens Point, showing their growth as a team.
