Eagles Make Game-Changing Move: QB Cole Payton Chosen on NFL Draft Day 3!

PHILADELPHIA – The Eagles have picked North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton in the fifth round of the NFL draft. This selection comes a decade after the team chose Carson Wentz as their second overall pick in 2016.

Wentz’s time with the Eagles had its ups and downs, especially after Philadelphia drafted Jalen Hurts in 2020. Now, Payton enters the scene as Hurts aims to reclaim his Super Bowl MVP form while adjusting to a new offensive strategy with coordinator Sean Mannion.

“Carson’s a stud,” Payton remarked, noting their shared agency and his admiration for Wentz, who played a key role in bringing interest to NDSU football.

Payton was a starter for just one season at North Dakota State. Last year, he threw for 16 touchdowns and rushed for 13, finishing with only four interceptions and a completion rate of 72%. He also racked up 777 rushing yards, proving his dual-threat capability.

His athleticism stood out at the NFL scouting combine in February, where he recorded a 40-inch vertical jump, ranking him as one of the best in recent years. He also impressed with a 130-inch broad jump, showcasing his dynamic abilities.

Payton joins Hurts, Tanner McKee, and veteran Andy Dalton in the quarterback room. He expressed excitement about learning from Hurts, saying, “I’m eager to soak up everything I can from him and the rest of the guys.”

McKee, a popular figure in the organization, was the main backup last season. Although he attracted trade interest, the Eagles decided to keep him for added security. General manager Howie Roseman highlighted the importance of having multiple capable quarterbacks, stating it provides peace of mind, especially during high-pressure situations.

Recent statistics show that dual-threat quarterbacks like Payton are increasingly valued in the NFL. According to a recent study by Pro Football Focus, teams that utilize mobile quarterbacks have seen a 30% increase in scoring efficiency over the last five seasons.

As the NFL evolves, having versatile players will be key for teams seeking success. Payton’s selection reflects the Eagles’ strategy of building a dynamic offense ready to tackle challenges ahead.
