EAM Jaishankar Addresses Deportation of Indian Immigrants from the US: Indian Government’s Commitment to Combat Human Trafficking

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed concerns in Parliament regarding the deportation of undocumented Indian migrants by the U.S. On February 6, 2025, he clarified that the use of restraints during these deportations is standard practice and not a new issue.

The minister announced that the Indian government would work with the U.S. to ensure the humane treatment of deportees. This statement followed public outcry over how 104 illegal Indian immigrants were sent back to India in a U.S. military plane, resulting in handcuffs and chains being used on them.

Jaishankar emphasized that since 2009, more than 15,000 Indian nationals have been deported from the U.S. The highest number occurred in 2019, with over 2,000 individuals sent back. He noted that all countries must accept their nationals who are residing illegally in foreign lands.

In Parliament, Jaishankar faced interruptions from opposition members who protested the treatment of the deportees, illustrating their discontent by chaining their hands. Prominent leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the situation and called for action, claiming that Indians should be treated with dignity rather than humiliation.

Jaishankar explained that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) oversees deportations and that their protocols, implemented in 2012, include the use of restraints. However, he assured that the Indian government is in discussions with U.S. authorities to ensure that migrants are not subjected to mistreatment during their return. He also stated that women and children deported are not restrained and that their basic needs are addressed during the journey.

This situation highlights the ongoing discussions around illegal migration, the rights of deported individuals, and the responsibilities that countries have toward their citizens abroad.
