External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently shared his thoughts on the strong relationship between India and the US, highlighting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a good rapport with US President Donald Trump. In a talk at Hansraj College in New Delhi, he described Trump as an “American nationalist” who is focused on the interests of the United States. Jaishankar attended Trump’s swearing-in ceremony and felt welcomed during his visit, which he believes sends a positive message about the ties between the two nations.
When asked if Trump is a friend or a threat to India, Jaishankar mentioned, “I just returned from being his guest. Our relations with America are good, and Modiji’s personal ties with Trump are positive.” He emphasized that while there may be differences in opinions on specific issues, the overall relationship holds many shared interests. He noted that Trump has fond memories of his visit to India in 2020, suggesting that such personal connections can strengthen diplomatic ties.
Jaishankar also addressed the vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” or developed India, stating that the youth play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future. He pointed out that India’s past development strategies had not kept pace with other Asian nations like Japan, Korea, and China, which adopted more modern governance approaches. “Without youth, there is no Viksit Bharat,” he insisted, urging a shift in mindset within India’s bureaucratic framework.
He stressed the importance of Delhi in driving the country’s development, stating, “Viksit Rajdhani, Viksit Delhi, is central to Vikasit Bharat.” Talking about working with PM Modi, Jaishankar praised his leadership style, calling him tough yet motivational. He appreciates Modi’s approach of empowering his team to take initiative rather than simply following orders. The successful evacuation of Indians from Ukraine was a notable example of Modi’s leadership, showcasing the importance of motivating the team and fostering a sense of responsibility in their work.
In summary, Jaishankar’s insights reflect a confident outlook on the India-US relationship and the crucial role of youth in India’s progress, along with an appreciation for PM Modi’s leadership style.
