ANTIOCH – Najee Harris, the NFL running back and Antioch native, was injured in a fireworks explosion over the Fourth of July. Although there were multiple injuries reported, Harris’s agent stated he expects him to be ready for the upcoming season.
Harris sustained a minor eye injury in the incident. The mishap occurred shortly after midnight on July 5, with Antioch authorities confirming that some victims received treatment at the scene, while others sought hospital care on their own. The police released a statement, expressing their sympathy for those affected and asking for privacy as they continue their investigation.
Social media buzzed with concern from fans after the news broke. Many recalled NFL veteran Jason Pierre-Paul, who played nine seasons after a serious hand injury from a fireworks accident in 2015. Harris, who recently signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, previously enjoyed a successful four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He rushed for 4,312 yards and scored 34 touchdowns during that time.
Reports indicate that he was treated at John Muir Hospital before being transferred to Stanford for further care. The details about his transport remain unclear.
In high school, Harris was a standout athlete, named the Bay Area News Group’s Offensive Player of the Decade in 2019. He finished his senior year with impressive statistics, averaging 9.5 yards per carry and scoring 34 touchdowns. Coaches from prestigious colleges, including Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, noted his talent early on. Later, at the University of Alabama, he rushed for 3,843 yards and contributed to two national championships.
