Easton Works Towards Reducing Light Pollution
In Easton, the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) is making strides to tackle light pollution. After a positive response from city officials last month, they’re drafting an ordinance. This new rule would help the city comply with DarkSky standards, aimed at reducing excessive artificial light.
Brandon Sullivan, the city’s Sustainability Coordinator, noted that the feedback has been encouraging. “We received strong support from those who commented,” he shared. Council members, including Roger Ruggles and Crystal Rose, expressed gratitude for the EAC’s efforts, while emphasizing the need to ensure safety on the streets.
The proposed measures could include using LED bulbs, installing shielded fixtures, and introducing dimmers on streetlights. Sullivan highlighted the importance of balancing the benefits of dark skies with public safety.
Next Steps
The EAC’s DarkSky Committee will meet soon to review successful models from other cities, like Flagstaff, Arizona. They are looking at templates from DarkSky International to guide their draft. Vice Chairwoman Stacy Melvin mentioned the committee plans to bring in additional input before presenting the draft to the City Council next month.

During a recent meeting, Kate Semmens from the Nurture Nature Center shared insights on Climate Action Week. The series of events was designed to engage residents in sustainability. Highlights included a well-attended TED talk on climate change and exhibitions at local libraries.
These activities align with larger trends in environmental activism; according to recent surveys, over 70% of Americans now prioritize sustainability. Semmens noted the ongoing success of events and shifted her focus to the upcoming Youth Climate Summit. Scheduled for April 24-25 at Northampton Community College, the summit aims to involve students in climate discussions and problem-solving.
State Rep. Bob Freeman emphasized the need for community action towards sustainability during the opening events. With plans already underway and a new Earth & Sky Dome under construction, Easton’s environmental initiatives show promise for engaging and educating the community.
