Ed Boon Hints at ‘Years of Content’ for Mortal Kombat 1 – But Why Did It Fall Short?

Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition has just been announced, and it’s generating a lot of buzz! This new edition will include the original game, Kombat Pack 1, the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack 2, and even some movie-themed skins.

Players can grab it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC for $69.99, while the Nintendo Switch version is priced at $59.99. For those who haven’t bought Mortal Kombat 1 yet, this package seems like a great deal. Expect to see a surge of new players soon!

However, seasoned fans might be disheartened by this news. It often signals that no new content will come for the game, indicating a shift toward NetherRealm Studios’ next project. Similar patterns occurred with previous editions like Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, where all post-launch content was bundled, and new DLC was halted.

Ed Boon, the creative director, expressed hope for continued content with Mortal Kombat 1, saying, “We were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content.” Yet, the reality is hitting harder now, as the game has had less than two years of additional content. This feels more like a closing chapter than a continuing story.

On a positive note, Mortal Kombat 1 did have 13 DLC characters, matching Mortal Kombat 11, and included six extra Kameo Fighters, which enhances the gameplay experience. Still, the lack of confirmation about new DLC leaves fans anxious. Historical trends suggest that this could be the end of the line for Mortal Kombat 1.

Insider reports hinted at a potential Kombat Pack 3, with characters like Jade and Cassie, but those plans fizzled due to the underperformance of the Khaos Reigns update. If it had been more successful, we might have seen more content coming our way.

Boon recently said they’ve already mapped out their next game well ahead of time. This raises the question: could a remastered Mortal Kombat collection be on the horizon? Boon believes it’s not a matter of “if” but “when.”
