El Paso Constables Team Up with Local Food Bank to Nourish the Community

Every week in El Paso, Texas, deputies from the local Constable’s office have a special mission: delivering care packages to those in need. This initiative, in partnership with El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank, strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the community.

For Deputy Enrique Solórzano, it’s more than just a job. It’s personal.

“I create bonds with individuals that I never knew in my life. I like getting involved with other people,” Solórzano shared during a recent ride-along.

Each delivery brings more than gratitude. It shows how important it is for officers to connect, listen, and be present. These care packages, filled with food and hygiene items, are made by volunteers at the food bank. Kris Yagel, the interim CEO of El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, highlights an often-hidden issue.

“Hunger and homelessness aren’t always obvious,” Yagel pointed out. “Leaders show up. Thanks to this program, we’re able to be there when people need us most.”

Constable Frank Almada believes this outreach is a natural addition to the welfare checks his deputies already conduct.

“We encounter people on the street who are homeless or struggling,” Almada said. “Sometimes they’re hungry, and knowing someone cares can make all the difference.”

Solórzano’s mission resonates deeply with him. He grew up relying on food assistance from the same food bank he now supports.

“I know what it’s like,” he reflected. “Now that I can help others—it just feels great. Maybe we can change a life.”

He emphasized, “It’s hard. But this isn’t the end for them. I want them to see that.”

This initiative is part of a growing trend across the U.S. In recent years, community-based programs have surged. In 2021, a survey found that 40% of Americans faced food insecurity at some point, underscoring the importance of these efforts. Nationally, organizations are increasingly recognizing that community engagement can play a crucial role in addressing social challenges.

Programs like these, which blend social services and law enforcement, help build trust, demonstrating that police can be allies rather than just enforcers. As society shifts, these actions are more relevant than ever, showing that communities can come together to support each other in tough times.
