Elder Clark G. Gilbert has been appointed to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This announcement came on Thursday.
At 55 years old, Elder Gilbert was born in Oakland, California, but spent much of his youth in Phoenix, Arizona. Since 2021, he’s served as a general authority seventy and as the commissioner of the Church Educational System.
In his first statement following the announcement, Elder Gilbert expressed his excitement. “This is an amazing time to point people to the Savior Jesus Christ. When we do that, we can find joy and peace,” he said. He and his wife, Christine, share this journey with their eight children.
Elder Gilbert’s position in the Quorum comes after the passing of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. He was ordained by church President Dallin H. Oaks and other leaders of the church.
Education has been a major focus throughout Elder Gilbert’s life. He believes it interlinks with the gospel. His experience includes roles as the president of BYU-Idaho and BYU-Pathway Worldwide. He studied international relations at Brigham Young University, earned a master’s from Stanford in East Asian studies, and completed his doctorate in business administration from Harvard.
Before his church leadership roles, he was a professor at Harvard. He also served as CEO of Deseret Digital Media and president of Deseret News.
In a reflection on life’s journey from 2021, Elder Gilbert emphasized the importance of looking forward. He stated, “One of the miracles of the Lord’s church is that each of us can become something more in Christ.” His words resonate, especially in today’s fast-paced world where people seek meaning and higher purpose.
