Elecam Excludes Maurice Kamto from Cameroon Election Ballot: What It Means for Voter Choices

Cameroon’s political scene is heating up as the presidential election on October 12 approaches. A notable absence from the candidate list is Maurice Kamto, the opposition leader who finished second in the 2018 elections. His exclusion raises eyebrows, especially since he faced allegations of fraud during his last campaign. Kamto has not yet responded to this latest setback.

President Paul Biya, who is 92 years old, is making headlines as the world’s oldest serving president. He’s running for an eighth term despite leading the country for nearly 43 years. Biya believes he still has much to offer the people of Cameroon. His main rivals are two former allies, Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Bello Bouba Maigari, both from northern Cameroon, a region known for its significant electoral influence.

Kamto’s exclusion stems from complications within the Manidem party. While he was officially adopted as a candidate, another individual registered under the same party name, complicating matters. Anicet Ekane, the president of Manidem, has called this decision “arbitrary and provocative,” urging people to remain calm as they intend to challenge the ruling. Disqualified candidates have a two-day window to contest the decision.

In 2018, Kamto represented the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) but was unable to do so this year because the party lacked elected officials. He switched to Manidem, which has local representation, hoping to bolster his chances.

The election list also includes other significant figures, like anti-corruption lawyer Akere Muna and Joshua Osih, the leader of the Social Democratic Front. Notably, Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya stands out as the only female candidate.

Public reaction is already swirling on social media, with many expressing concern over Kamto’s exclusion. Discussions around the fairness of the electoral process continue to grow, as users share their thoughts and frustrations.

Political analysts point out that Kamto’s absence could affect voter turnout and sentiment. A recent survey indicated that 65% of citizens are dissatisfied with the current administration, reflecting a hunger for change.
