Katihar residents are about to see some significant improvements in train services. From January 17, new Amrit Bharat Express trains will connect this district to major cities across India.
One of the key routes, train 06224, will travel from Barsoi Junction to Radhikapur and then go all the way to Bengaluru. Another exciting addition is train 01032, linking Siliguri to Panvel with a stop at Katihar. Other services include routes from Rangapani to Nagercoil and New Jalpaiguri to Tiruchirappalli, among others.
A special train, the 05671 Amrit Bharat Express, will leave from Kamakhya Junction to Rohtak Junction, departing Katihar on January 18 at 10:30 p.m. This launch will be flagged off by local MP Tariq Anwar.
Local leaders are thrilled. Pankaj Kumar Tamakhwala, a spokesperson for the District Congress, expressed gratitude to both MP Anwar and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their roles in these developments.
This upgrade comes at a crucial time. The New Jalpaiguri station, part of the Katihar railway division, is under major renovation. With an investment of about Rs 335 crore, it aims to become a modern hub for Northeast India. Similarly, Santragachi station is getting a facelift as a multi-modal hub, costing around Rs 380 crore, intended to ease congestion in the busy Howrah-Kolkata area.
These improvements align with Indian Railways’ broader effort to enhance infrastructure in eastern India. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over 1,300 railway stations across the country are being redeveloped. This effort includes adding passenger amenities, improving accessibility for the disabled, and upgrading transport facilities, all while incorporating local architectural styles.
As these services roll out, it’s a sign of progress that many residents hope will bring economic benefits and ease travel across the region. With modernized facilities and better access to major cities, Katihar’s future looks promising.
