Elevate Your Viewing Experience: Netflix Introduces Dialogue-Only Subtitles!

Netflix has just introduced a new subtitle feature that focuses only on spoken dialogue. Previously, they offered Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC), which included descriptions of sounds and speaker names. This new option simplifies things by removing those audio cues.

Right now, this feature is available only in English and can be seen with new Netflix original programs. The first title to use it is season 5 of You. Netflix’s representative, Dorian Rosenburg, mentioned that they are looking to expand this option to older titles in the future.

Why is this change significant? Recent data shows that nearly half of all viewing hours on Netflix in the U.S. involve subtitles or captions. A reported 50% of Americans use subtitles when watching TV. Many viewers have shared their reasons for this trend. Some prefer lower TV volume, while others find it hard to follow dialogue. As highlighted by a New York Times article, audio issues often arise with streaming due to TV and smartphone speaker limitations.

The dialogue-only option is easy to find. Just go to Netflix’s language settings while watching a compatible title, select the English tab, and choose the English option. You’ll also find the traditional English (CC) option there, which includes those audio descriptions.
