Elevating India’s Future: Piyush Goyal Advocates Quality as the Key to ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently emphasized the importance of quality in India’s manufacturing and export sectors. Speaking at the National Quality Conclave, he outlined a clear vision for India’s economic future, aiming for a more robust global presence.

Goyal pointed out that for India to transform from a consumer-oriented economy to a leading global producer, we must embrace the mantra of “zero defect, zero effect.” This idea, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggests that our growth should reflect excellence in both quality and sustainability.

He set an ambitious goal for India to reach $2 trillion in exports over the next six to seven years, with a focus on creating products that meet or exceed international standards. This requires manufacturing that not only meets quality benchmarks but also fosters trust in “Brand India.”

Goyal highlighted recent achievements in global trade, mentioning nine free trade agreements signed with 38 countries in the last few years. These agreements could open doors for various sectors, including textiles, leather, and pharmaceuticals, provided that Indian companies deliver high-quality products consistently.

Despite these promising developments, he pointed out that India’s share in the global trade marketplace remains relatively small. This is especially true in labor-intensive sectors where India has great potential.

Goyal’s message is urgent. He encourages businesses to leverage the improved access to global markets while ensuring that the goods offered domestically match the high standards expected internationally. He called for ending the “dual-quality system,” urging manufacturers to adopt uniform quality standards for both local and export markets.

Historically, good quality was often reserved solely for exports, but today’s consumers are demanding more. A recent survey showed that over 70% of Indian consumers prioritize quality in their buying decisions, aligning perfectly with Goyal’s advocacy for a shift in manufacturing principles.

With a focus on quality, India not only aims to compete globally, but also to nurture consumer confidence in home-grown products. This approach could redefine our economy and enhance our standing in the global trade arena.
