Eleven people have been arrested in connection with a tragic mass shooting at a tavern in South Africa that took the lives of nine individuals on Sunday. The incident happened in Bekkersdal, near Johannesburg, around 1 AM local time. Authorities are still searching for twelve unidentified gunmen involved in the attack.
According to Major General Fred Kekana, the deputy commissioner of police, among those arrested, nine are from Lesotho and one is from Mozambique. They also detained a suspect believed to be a South African mineworker.
South Africa struggles with high murder rates, often linked to gang violence, arguments, or robberies. Initially, the shooting seemed unprovoked, but early investigations suggest it might be connected to turf wars over illegal mining.
During the chaos, as patrons fled, the gunmen continued firing, tragically killing two people and a taxi driver nearby. Police found several unlicensed firearms, including an AK-47, in the suspects’ possession.
Statistics from the South African Gunowners’ Association show around three million legal firearms and at least an equal number of unlicensed ones in the country. Despite a decline in reported mass shootings in 2025, incidents involving four or more casualties have reportedly increased since 2020. Claire Taylor, a researcher with Gun Free South Africa, noted that many of these attacks often occur at licensed taverns or illegal drinking spots, known as shebeens.
This recent shooting follows another violent incident just two weeks prior at the Saulsville Hostel in Pretoria, where eleven people, including a three-year-old child, lost their lives.
