Eli-Mac Triumphs with Island Vibes: Overcoming Concert Challenges!

When reggae artist Eli-Mac sang her hit, “They Don’t Know,” the crowd sprang to life at the “Roots and Soul” concert in Hagåtña’s Plaza de España. Despite a rocky start with a blown generator, which caused sound issues just three songs in, the energy was infectious.

Hundreds gathered to enjoy performances from an all-female lineup, featuring local talents like Brandi Jae, LadySoul, and TINI, each contributing their flair to the night. As Brandi Jae covered “Zombie” by The Cranberries, the sound failures became a challenge. But the audience was undeterred, enjoying cocktails, shopping, and tasty bites from local vendors.

After a two-hour wait to fix the sound issues, Eli-Mac took the stage and electrified the crowd with her unique blend of R&B, hip-hop, and reggae. Rising to fame as a Top 10 finalist on Season 3 of American Idol, she expressed deep gratitude for performing in Guam again. Her stylized vocals and lively band quickly made everyone forget the earlier setbacks.

Her closing number, “Mr. Sensi,” boasts over 13 million streams on Spotify, and the crowd joyfully sang along. “The concert brought the community together,” shared Alayna Kerbil Alonz, a student at the University of Guam.

Even during the lengthy delay, attendees like Eliana Cuevas found camaraderie among friends. “The sound issues were tough, but I’m just glad to be here with my friends,” she said.

LadySoul’s dynamic set revived the audience’s spirits when the generator returned, leading into TINI’s vibrant performance that set the tone for Eli-Mac’s show. Additional acts like Talent Box Dance Studio, Zion, and JC enriched the lineup, hosted by local personalities.

While mishaps occurred, many felt that the concert transcended typical music events. Kaitlin Bautista noted it was a wonderful chance to gather with family. Concert-goer Monica Cosico appreciated meeting CHamoru artists, including Florence Torres, who highlighted the Deaf Academy program, adding depth to the experience.

Florence, a master weaver, and her colleagues drew attention to this important initiative. Eli-Mac’s own journey, as someone who is hard of hearing, resonated strongly within the crowd, emphasizing the concert’s theme of unity and empowerment.
