A specialized team of Finnish divers has recovered two of the four Italian tourists who tragically lost their lives while exploring an underwater cave in the Maldives. The bodies were located at a depth of around 200 feet after recovery operations resumed following the unfortunate death of a military diver.
The four missing individuals included Monica Montefalcone, 52, her 20-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal, Muriel Oddenino, 31, and Federico Gualtieri, 31. They disappeared last Thursday during their dive in the cave, which posed several challenges due to its depth and complexity.
Officials have not confirmed the identities of the recovered bodies yet. However, Ahmed Shaam, a spokesperson for the Maldives government, reported that the two bodies were found close together in a large section of the cave. The recovery efforts were undertaken by a team assembled by Divers Alert Network Europe, known for its expertise in search and recovery missions.
The divers employed advanced techniques, including closed-circuit rebreathers that recycle exhaled air and remove carbon dioxide, allowing for longer, safer dives. This technology is vital in hazardous underwater environments.
Earlier in the week, the body of diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, 44, was also recovered near the cave entrance. Unfortunately, the recovery operations faced severe setbacks. A member of the Maldivian National Defense Force, Sgt. Major Mohamed Mahudhee, passed away from decompression sickness during the search efforts.
