Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren is urging the Trump administration to release the jobs report for September, even as the government remains shut down. This report, created by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), is crucial for understanding the job market’s health, especially with rising unemployment concerns.
Warren’s request comes after former BLS employees informed her office that the September data is already collected and ready for release. “Let’s be clear: the jobs data is ready, and the President must release it,” Warren said. This data is vital for the Federal Reserve to make informed decisions about interest rates, which affect families across the country. The Fed’s next meeting on policy is set for October 28 and 29.
However, the Labor Department has indicated that major economic data releases, including the jobs report, are on hold during the shutdown. If the situation persists, other crucial reports, such as inflation data due in mid-October, may also be delayed.
Warren has written to key officials, emphasizing that the data could have been released despite the shutdown. She mentions that William Beach, a previous BLS commissioner, confirmed the September data has been processed and is likely ready to go.
“The jobs report is likely finalized and could be shared on Friday if the agency reopens,” Beach noted in a piece published by the Fiscal Lab, an independent research center.
The White House has deflected blame for the shutdown onto Democrats, claiming they are stalling essential economic data. “Businesses and policymakers rely on this information,” said White House spokesperson Kush Desai.
